Today, 30 students from Kalyani school and 30 from Hutchings School participated in uprooting weeds and invasive plants like subabul at Anandvan 1.

These children understand that planting trees is just one step in the process of creating an urban forest. Weeding favors the growth of desired trees, controls noxious weeds, improves visibility along forest roads, improves wildlife habitat, and prevents forest fires. For example, subabul is an invasive plant species from Mexico that was introduced to India for fuel and fodder. But its rapid propagation is depleting groundwater and affecting the survival of native plant species. It also disrupts the symbiosis between the surrounding flora and fauna, endangering biodiversity. Hence, weed removal is absolutely essential to maintain an urban forest.
